At any given
time, as many as 40,000 mares in the United States and Canada are hooked up to urine
collection devices. The cruelty surrounding the collection of pregnant mares
urine (PMU) is not widely known. Mares are kept in narrow stalls with no opportunity
for exercise. To concentrate the estrogen in their urine, they are given just two
drinks of water a day, despite needing much more. They are separated from their
foals shortly after birth and impregnated again. The majority of the foals born to
these mares go to slaughter for overseas export. The short lifespan of these mares
is miserable.
Hormone replacement therapy is
essential for many women, however Premarin is not the only source of estrogen. There
are many plant-based therapies that can work just as well. Among the possibilities
are: Estrace, Estra tab, Estinyl, Estraderm, Estrovirus, Menest, Ogen, Tace, Ortho
Dienestrol, OrthoEst, Cenestin. If you are taking Premarin, speak to your physician
about switching to a cruelty-free alternative.
Too many women are unaware of the
real story behind Premarin and other hormone replacement therapies made with estrogens
derived from horse urine. The key to informing them lies with the packaging and
labeling for these drugs.
Please send a
polite e-mail or letter to the FDA asking that they require pharmaceutical companies to
fully disclose that the source material for Premarin and similar products is pregnant
mares urine.
